                                             You
will meet the various forms of the German indefinite article; memorize
these forms. In addition, you will be introduced to the German direct
object; be sure you understand the difference between direct objects
and
predicate nominatives.
You learned to decline the definite
article ("the" in English) in Chapter 2. Now here are the
forms of the indefinite article ("a," "an"
in English):
                    Masculine                  Feminine                    Neuter
Nominative        ein Freund               eine Schwester          ein Mädchen
Accusative        einen Freund           eine Schwester          ein Mädchen
Dative               einem Freund           einer Schwester        einem Mädchen
Genitive            eines Freundes        einer Schwester        eines Mädchens
The accusative case: Nominative case forms are used for subjects and predicate
nominatives. Direct objects, however, must be expressed in the accusative case. A
direct object is a noun or pronoun that answers the question "whom?" or "what?"
when asked immediately after the verb. In the following sentences the direct
objects are in italics:
We need the rain. (We need what?)
Wir brauchen den Regen.
I see the girl. (I see whom?)
Ich sehe das Mädchen.
She has a son and a daughter. (She has what?)
Sie hat einen Sohn und eine Tochter.
Note that predicate nominatives, not direct
objects, follow forms of "to be." Example: He is the father.
You are not the sister. Predicate nominatives are in the
nominative case, not the accusative case.
Word order hint: If a word or phrase other than
the subject comes first in a German sentence, the next word is the verb,
which is followed immediately by the subject. Here are some examples,

Hoffentlich habe ich recht. Nach Hause gehen wir. Die Zeitung brauchen wir nicht.
Der (ein) Jungeis
a special noun. It has the following singular forms:
Nominative                   der Junge
Accusative                    den Jungen
Dative                           dem Jungen
Genitive                        des Jungen

Here are the present-tense
forms of
heißen. Look carefully at the du-form.

ich heiße                           wir heißen
du heißt                             ihr heißt
er, sie, es heißt                 sie heißen

first question that we have to answer is: Why I can not remember it?!!! Taking a little time for that is going to help
a lot. If we can find the reason and the answer for that particulate word, it is going to open our way. The first one
always is the hardest, but we have to push as much as we can. But at the same time we should be flexible to try
with the next one, if this one is going to give you hard time. Then keep trying any time that you find such a word.
The main question: Why I can not learn, memorize that word?  You will find the answer, because there is only
you that can do it.
